Trigonometry: How it is used by Engineers

CHAPTER I

Trigonometry is a branch of mathematics that explores the relationships between the lengths of triangle sides and angles (Burns, 2014). Trigonometry has long contributed a great number of concepts, inventions, and instruments to our world; it can be observed in our everyday lives. Trigonometry is applied in different fields of study such as Physics, Architecture, Astronomy, Medicine, Electronics, Engineering and many more. Without trigonometry, we probably would not understand much about our world. This paper will focus on the application of trigonometry in Engineering. This paper aims to discuss the importance of trigonometry in different fields of Engineering.

Engineers use trigonometric concepts to calculate sides and angles. According to Erudite (2017), Trigonometric functions, and theorems like sine and cosine rule and Pythagorean Theorem are used mostly. There are more than 40 fields of engineering, and most of them apply the concept of triangles. Burns (2014) said that civil and mechanical engineers use trigonometry to calculate torque and forces on objects, such as bridges or building girders. Erudite (2017) stated that Aerospace and other engineers calculate the distance between celestial bodies in space, the rate of draining water, wind correction in space for flights, and many more.

The researcher believes that this concept paper could be of great help to students who want to know how trigonometry is applied in engineering. This will also help them know about different inventions or methods in different fields of engineering. This paper will be relevant to teachers, and students for this will better help them understand and appreciate trigonometry.

CHAPTER II

This chapter is about the objectives of the concept paper or the product of the paper. This concept paper aims to gather all necessary information about the different applications and inventions of trigonometry in different fields of engineering. To efficaciously obtain the goals of the research, it is important that the following concept problems be answered:

1. What are the different types of engineering that use trigonometry and how do they use it?
2. What is the importance of trigonometry?

CHAPTER III

In this chapter, the answers to the problems will be stated. The answers will be based on related literatures and preliminary researches.

The question is: What are the different types of engineering that use trigonometry and how do they use it?

According to Brua (2016), both mechanical and civil engineers make use of the mathematical understanding of planes to break down curvatures, patterns or electrical fields into mathematical terms. Mechanical systems can be imagined and drawn in mechanical terms, and problems in these systems can be answered with geometric understanding.

Second, Structural engineers are tasked with constructing buildings that can withstand different natural factors while making aesthetic embellishments from a designer possible. Structural engineers can also map light and sound patterns through a room using expressions from trigonometry.

Third, Outline and test electrical formats are planned by Electrical Engineers particularly mapping out prerequisites and streams of power all through a building. Prado (2017) said that information of trigonometric capacities is likewise essential to the portrayal of exchanging current. The yield of a voltage generator can be demonstrated with enough exactness by Asin (ωt) Asin f () (ωt) (or identically with cosine). Consequently the calculation of current, power, productivity and other helpful amounts depends intensely on the information of trigonometric characters.

Ferrao (2016) said that flight engineers need to consider their speed, distance, and bearing alongside the speed and course of the wind. The wind assumes an essential part in how and when a plane will arrive any place required. This is illuminated using vectors to make a triangle utilizing trigonometry to solve. For instance, if a plane is going at 234 mph, 45 degrees N of E, and there is a wind blowing due south at 20 mph. Trigonometry will comprehend for that third side of your triangle which will lead the plane the correct way, the plane will actually go with the power of twist included to its course.

Ferrao (2016) expressed that in marine designing, trigonometry is utilized to fabricate and explore marine vessels. To be more particular trigonometry is utilized to outline the Marine incline, which is a slanting surface to associate lower and more elevated amount regions, it can be a slant or even a staircase relying upon its application.

Finally, Ashbox (2017) said that Audio Engineers likewise utilize trigonometry. Light goes in straight lines known as beams while sounds go in waves. The wave examples can be approximately mapped to the sine and cosine charts and portrayals. This helps performers/specialists to grow new music that is addictive and appealing to the listeners. It enables makers to control the distinctive qualities, for example, bass, treble and volume amid various parts of the creation. With identification of sound wave patterns, computers are now able to comprehend music as we do and mathematically engineer new sounds and music.

Aside from those given examples, there are many more fields of engineering that use trigonometry.

According to Joyce (2013), Trigonometry is a fundamental component of calculus. In statistics, trigonometric functions are necessary for the computation of the bell curve and for the study of seasonal periodicities. An extensive variety of nonmathematical fields depend on trigonometric capacities, regardless of the possibility that individuals from those fields don’t know that trigonometry is included. Aside from those already mentioned, trigonometry has added to progresses in the fields of acoustics, design, cartography, geophysics, crystallography, hardware, restorative imaging and pharmacology. Round trigonometry was utilized as a part of space science to locate the area of stars and planets preceding the creation of direct polynomial math. Surveyors and designers have been utilizing trigonometry in their labor for a long time.

Trigonometry is a vital math topic that everyone must understood clearly as early as possible to easily develop strong knowledge on the subject. Trigonometry is only a lesson in math, but its application can be more observed than other subjects. The researcher believes that trigonometry will continue to contribute new inventions and applications to the world. The researcher also believes that the human’s knowledge about trigonometry will not cease to get broader. In the future, discoveries in Science especially on the outer space will include trigonometry. In short, it is important for most students to study trigonometry for it will not only help them on their college education but will also help the development and innovation of our world.
